how to fix an electric scooter – step by step
In this article, I will show you how to repair or fix an electric scooter. This scooter is representative of many found on the streets today and so it should be possible for most people with some mechanical skills to follow along.
The first thing you have to know about repairing an electric scooter is that they are powered by a hub motor. The motor is usually very heavy duty and because of this, being able to remove the wheel without having problems is crucial. So, in order to get things started properly, you have to stick a flat-head screwdriver into the notch on the axle that locks it into place under the fork.
Next, you just need to pull the axle out by pulling it towards the outside of the fork. You will have to use some force because the bearings are usually very tight, but just keep wiggling it until it pops out.
Once you have removed the axle from one side of the fork, take your flat head screwdriver and pry the other side out of the fork.
After both sides of the axle have been removed from the forks, you can lift it up and take off the tire.
Once you’ve taken off this first layer of protection, you will see a typical hub motor.
Now, all you have to do is detach the wires from the motor and remove the caps that keep them in their places.
After this, you can just tip the whole motor assembly backward and take it out of its position.
Now, there will be a small metal cover on top of the axle that has four bolts securing it in place. These bolts should be very easy to unscrew using your hands or an adjustable wrench, but if you want to be extra careful you should use pliers instead.
Now that this piece is off, you will see the center of the motor.
Here comes the fun part: you will have to remove the rotor from the axle. To do this, simply unscrew the screws that hold it in place using your screwdriver and wiggle it off.
Now, you can see that there is a thin plastic piece between the two magnets. This needs to be removed because it’s what gives the motor its torque. This is why it’s very easy to remove this plastic piece with your bare hands because the magnets will hold onto most of it.
After you’ve done this, all there’s left to do is put everything back together in reverse order and put the wheel back on.
This is the basic principle to fix an electric scooter. If you remove the wheel and take a look at the motor, it will probably look very similar to this one.
How do I reset my electric scooter?
To reset your electric scooter hold down the brake on/off switch and one of the modes switches until all lights flash.
This will bring the battery management system into a ‘resetting’ state for about 20 seconds or so. After that it should be back to normal again with your board’s new parameters, ready for you to enjoy.
Please note that this is an advanced reset function, designed to be used when your board’s not behaving the way it should in many cases you won’t need to perform this step at all.
It’s unlikely you’ll ever need to use the reset procedure unless you’re having problems. However, if things aren’t working as they should and you’re certain everything’s connected up correctly, the board is fully charged and switched on, and still not working then it might be worth spending a minute or two trying this procedure.
As well that if your board isn’t responding when you press the throttle, for example, you’re pressing it but only getting slow speed when you try to accelerate, then this is a great way of rebooting the system and clearing any potential problems.
